Where Does the Shared Experience Go in a Post-AI World?

When everyone can generate their own music, movies, games, books and worlds with AI, the rarest form of media may become something we experience together.

For most of modern history, culture has been shaped as much by scarcity as by creativity. There were only so many television networks, movie screens, radio stations, record labels, publishing houses and shelves in the local bookstore. Only a fraction of the music recorded in any given year received national distribution. Only a fraction of the films imagined were actually made. Even when artists wanted to create something, the economics of production and distribution imposed a brutal question: Is there a large enough audience to justify making this?

Those limitations created powerful gatekeepers, and there is little reason to romanticize them. Studios, publishers, networks, labels and retailers possessed enormous influence over which voices reached the public and which disappeared. Yet those same bottlenecks produced something valuable almost accidentally. Because relatively few cultural artifacts could reach enormous audiences, millions of people repeatedly encountered the same ones.

That gave us shared experience.

People watched the same television finales, waited for the same movies, heard the same songs and recognized the same celebrities, advertisements, jokes and stories. You could walk into work after a major television event and reasonably expect someone else had watched it. Put a familiar song on at a party and an entire room might recognize the opening notes. Quote a movie and someone might finish the line.

Mass media did more than distribute entertainment. It manufactured common cultural territory.

Artificial intelligence may be about to blow that territory apart.

The End of Content Scarcity

Generative AI is rapidly reducing the cost and technical difficulty involved in producing almost every form of media. Images came early. Writing followed. Music, voices and increasingly sophisticated video arrived behind them. Games and interactive environments are moving along the same trajectory. None of these technologies is finished, and today's limitations are substantial, but the direction is difficult to miss.

Eventually, the distinction between finding entertainment and creating entertainment may become surprisingly thin.

Instead of searching a streaming service for a science-fiction series, you might describe the series you want: a slow political drama aboard a generation ship 300 years from Earth, historically informed, morally ambiguous and twelve episodes long. Rather than buying the latest open-world game, you might request an alternate-history RPG in which the Roman Empire survived into the industrial age, complete with realistic economics, political factions and characters capable of remembering years of interaction.

Music could become even more personal. Instead of searching for a playlist that helps you concentrate, an AI system might understand precisely what kinds of rhythms, harmonies, tempos and textures help you work and generate an endless soundtrack that has never existed before and may never exist again. Family photographs might become interactive environments. A grandfather's journals could become a film. A favorite fictional universe could continue indefinitely because there would no longer need to be a final book, episode or game.

Humanity may be approaching something that previous generations could scarcely imagine: effectively infinite media.

And infinite media creates a peculiar problem. If almost anything can exist, what does everyone know?

Eight Billion Channels

The fragmentation of mass culture did not begin with artificial intelligence. Cable television fractured the television audience. The internet fractured it further. Streaming replaced a relatively small number of schedules with enormous on-demand libraries. Social media then personalized the information environment itself, producing feeds that increasingly differ from person to person.

Generative AI represents another step, but it may be a qualitatively different one.

Today's recommendation algorithms choose among things that already exist. Tomorrow's systems may create the thing being recommended. Instead of selecting the video most likely to hold your attention, the system could generate a video specifically designed to hold your attention. Instead of identifying the novel you are most likely to enjoy, it could write one. Instead of recommending a game, it could construct one around your preferences.

The ultimate recommendation engine does not recommend. It creates.

Consider where that leads. Your movie can have your preferred pacing, aesthetic and emotional intensity. Your game can contain the mechanics and difficulty you enjoy. Your fictional universe can emphasize the themes that fascinate you. Stories can avoid subjects you dislike or, more troublingly, ideas that challenge you. Characters can become exactly as comforting, provocative, funny or sympathetic as the system has learned you want them to be.

The age of mass media gave us a handful of channels. The internet gave us millions.

Generative AI could give us eight billion.

Cultural Loneliness

Now imagine watching one of the greatest movies you have ever seen. It moves you deeply. The performances are extraordinary, the story seems uncannily relevant to your life and the ending stays with you for days. Naturally, you want to talk about it.

But nobody else has seen it.

Nobody else ever will.

The movie was generated specifically for you, perhaps in real time, and it may not even exist anymore.

That represents a fundamentally different relationship with culture because part of the meaning of art has always existed outside the artifact itself. A song matters partly because of what happens between you and the song, but it can also matter because you remember singing it with someone twenty years ago. A film becomes part of culture because millions of strangers remember the same scene. A championship becomes mythology because an entire city remembers exactly where it was when the final seconds disappeared from the clock.

Human beings don't merely experience things. We also experience the knowledge that other human beings experienced them.

There may be a peculiar loneliness waiting inside personalized media abundance. It would not be loneliness caused by having nothing to watch, read, hear or play. Quite the opposite. We could have an inexhaustible supply of astonishing entertainment and still discover that something important is missing because so much of it belongs only to us.

We might call this cultural loneliness: isolation not from a lack of experience, but from an abundance of experiences that cannot easily be shared.

The Strange Return of Scarcity

This creates one of the more delicious paradoxes of the AI era. For centuries, communications technology has relentlessly attacked scarcity. Printing presses made books reproducible at scale. Recording technology separated music from the physical presence of musicians. Radio and television transmitted performances across continents. The internet drove the marginal cost of copying information toward zero. Streaming placed libraries that once would have seemed imperial in scale inside a device carried in a pocket.

Generative AI attacks the remaining bottleneck: creation itself.

And after spending centuries eliminating scarcity from media, we may begin deliberately rebuilding some of it.

Not because people will suddenly develop nostalgia for expensive books or limited television schedules, but because scarcity can produce commonality. A cultural artifact experienced by everyone in the same form becomes a meeting place. The inability to customize it may become part of its value.

It is possible to imagine future media advertising something that sounds completely unremarkable today: Everyone gets the same version. The story does not adapt to your preferences. The protagonist does not become more sympathetic because the system senses you are losing interest. The ending cannot be regenerated because you disliked it. This movie is this movie. This album is this album. This book ends where its creator decided it ends.

In a world of infinite personalization, limitation itself could become meaningful.

Reality Gets a Premium

This may also make certain forms of culture considerably more valuable, and sports provide perhaps the clearest example.

Nobody knows how the game ends. Nobody can personalize the score. Your AI cannot quietly rewrite the fourth quarter because you would prefer the Packers to win. Millions of people experience the same event simultaneously, and reality stubbornly refuses to optimize itself for any of them.

That stubbornness may become extraordinarily valuable.

The same principle applies to concerts, festivals, theater, religious ceremonies, community gatherings, political events, universities, restaurants and public spaces. They are places where something happens in the presence of other people and where the outcome cannot be perfectly generated for every participant.

As synthetic experience becomes more convincing and more abundant, we may assign greater value to experiences precisely because they are unscripted, shared and difficult to reproduce. A concert matters because you were there. A football game matters because everyone saw the same impossible catch. A neighborhood festival matters because the rain actually started at four o'clock and everyone ran beneath the same tent.

Reality may acquire a premium.

Place Becomes an Anchor

Place may become particularly important because physical geography provides something personalized media cannot easily dissolve: a common reference point.

A town, neighborhood, river, university, sports team, landscape or building can belong to thousands of individual stories while remaining recognizably the same place. AI can generate infinite interpretations of Wisconsin, but it cannot manufacture the historical fact that generations of people have stood beside the same Fox River, driven the same roads, attended the same schools or watched the same landscape change.

Technology can interpret place endlessly. Place itself remains stubbornly common.

This could have an unexpected cultural consequence. Hyperlocal media, historically constrained by economics, may flourish precisely because AI destroys the requirement that culture appeal to enormous audiences before it becomes economically practical to create.

A traditional record company has little reason to finance an album about the history of a small Wisconsin town. The addressable market is absurdly small by conventional entertainment economics. A documentary studio probably cannot justify spending hundreds of thousands of dollars telling that town's story either.

AI changes the arithmetic.

A community of 15,000 people can have an album about its history. A neighborhood can have a documentary. A high school can have an interactive archive. A family can have a film. A university can have music tracing its history. A village can possess cultural artifacts sophisticated enough to once have required teams of professional creators and substantial capital.

This is one of the genuine promises of generative AI. It does not merely threaten mass culture. It can make previously uneconomic culture possible.

Instead of one national cultural commons serving 100 million people, we could develop millions of smaller ones rooted in communities, interests, histories and places.

Not mass culture.

Microculture.

From Shared Consumption to Shared Creation

There is another possibility worth considering: perhaps we are looking for shared experience in the wrong place.

For most of the industrial media era, shared culture primarily meant consuming the same artifact. We watched the same television program, listened to the same record, read the same bestseller or played the same game. The creators were relatively few and the audience was enormous.

Generative AI could radically increase the number of people capable of making sophisticated cultural artifacts. That does not necessarily mean everyone suddenly becomes an artist, any more than smartphone cameras turned everyone into a professional photographer. But it dramatically lowers the technical threshold between imagining something and producing a version of it.

That could change the cultural conversation from “Did you see that?” toward “What did you make?”

People may exchange generated songs. Families may create games together. Children may construct fictional universes with friends. Communities may collectively produce histories. Fans may inhabit collaborative worlds that evolve through the contributions of thousands of participants.

The artifact remains important, but the act of creation itself becomes social.

The twentieth century was dominated by shared consumption. The AI era may introduce much more shared creation.

That could produce remarkable new forms of human expression. It could also produce another form of fragmentation if everyone retreats into private creative universes. Both outcomes can be true simultaneously.

The Problem of the Perfect Mirror

The danger of personalized media extends beyond loneliness. Shared culture has always forced us, however imperfectly, to encounter other minds.

An author does not know exactly what you want. A filmmaker makes choices you dislike. A musician releases an album that goes somewhere you did not expect. A game frustrates you. A story presents a character whose worldview irritates you. Art occasionally bores, annoys, challenges or confuses us.

That friction matters because another person made choices that were not optimized around our preferences.

A perfectly personalized AI entertainment system could gradually eliminate that friction. The machine learns what makes us laugh, what makes us angry, which characters we identify with, which subjects hold our attention, which ideas make us uncomfortable and which endings leave us satisfied. Every interaction provides another piece of information. The system improves.

Eventually, personalized culture could function less like a window through which we encounter another mind and more like an extraordinarily sophisticated mirror reflecting our own preferences back at us.

That is not merely an entertainment problem. It is potentially a social one.

Communities require common reference points. Relationships require experiences that exist independently of either participant. Democratic societies require at least some shared conception of reality before their members can meaningfully disagree about what should be done about it.

A civilization composed of billions of personalized cultural realities may discover that infinite choice carries an unexpected price.

Humans Will Build Campfires Again

None of this means shared culture disappears. Human beings are too social for that. The more likely outcome is that we invent new mechanisms for gathering attention and rediscover old ones that suddenly become more valuable.

Some cultural campfires will remain enormous: the World Cup, the Olympics, major elections, championship games, global concerts, scientific breakthroughs and historic events. Others will be tiny: a neighborhood festival, a university tradition, a group of friends sharing an AI world, a local album, a family film or a community gathering around the history of the place where they live.

The technological campfire changes. The human impulse to gather around one probably does not.

What changes is that gathering may increasingly become a choice.

For much of the industrial media era, shared culture was partly an accident of technological limitation. There simply weren't enough channels for everyone to disappear into an individually constructed universe. The limitations of production and distribution forced us into common cultural spaces whether we consciously valued them or not.

AI removes many of those limitations.

Future generations may therefore have to deliberately create common spaces, preserve common stories, attend common events and occasionally seek experiences that have not been optimized specifically for them. Shared culture may stop being something the media system automatically produces and become something communities actively maintain.

That may be one of the more important cultural adaptations required by artificial intelligence.

The Rarest Thing in the Infinite Library

There is an extraordinary upside to all of this that should not disappear beneath the warnings.

AI could allow millions of stories to exist that previously would never have been told. Communities too small to interest a record label can have music. Children can build games. Families can create films. Forgotten places can have interactive histories. People without the money, equipment, connections or technical skills once required to participate in sophisticated media production can move much closer to the creative process.

That democratization matters. Something genuinely new is becoming possible.

But technological abundance has a habit of creating new forms of scarcity. When information became abundant, attention became scarce. When communication became abundant, trust became increasingly valuable. When digital reproduction became effortless, authenticity acquired a premium.

When creative content becomes effectively infinite, another scarcity may emerge:

The experience we know someone else had too.

That may become one of the defining cultural questions of the post-AI world.

The question will not be what we watch. There may eventually be more things to watch than a person could experience in a million lifetimes. It will not be what we listen to, because music could become effectively infinite. It may not even be what we create, because the boundary between imagination and production could become astonishingly thin.

The harder question is much more human.

What will we experience together?

Because in a world capable of generating a universe for every individual, the most valuable place may turn out to be the one place we still agree to meet.

The AI Productivity Mirage

So naturally, I’m here to tell you that AI is making everyone incredibly productive.

Except... maybe it isn’t.

A recent Reuters investigation into Meta’s internal AI transformation offers a fascinating little complication to the story Silicon Valley would very much like us to believe.

According to the report, code changes increased by more than 200 percent during Meta’s push toward AI-assisted development.

Sounds amazing.

But changes resulting in new or improved features for users increased by only 36 percent.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported increases in technical and security incidents, along with substantially more employee time spent firefighting problems.

So congratulations. We made more stuff.

We also made more stuff that humans had to fix.

And that exposes something potentially important about the AI economy.

Generative AI is exceptionally good at creating things that look like work: code, documents, reports, emails, presentations, marketing content and analysis. The numbers can climb beautifully. Everyone gets a dashboard. Someone gets a PowerPoint showing a 200 percent productivity increase. Perhaps there is even a meeting celebrating how many meetings AI has eliminated.

But somebody still has to ask whether any of it actually mattered.

AI-generated output can create its own hidden workload. Someone may need to review it, correct mistakes, coordinate competing outputs, resolve security problems or repair downstream consequences. A company can theoretically automate part of a job while quietly creating new human work around the automation.

That does not mean AI productivity gains are imaginary. Far from it. AI can already make individual workers and organizations significantly more capable.

Look at me. I’m literally an AI-generated woman explaining this to you in an AI-generated article accompanying an AI-generated video.

We have clearly solved productivity.

But the Meta experience suggests we should be suspicious of measuring the AI transformation primarily by how much more stuff gets produced.

The better question is not:

How much more did we produce?

It is:

How much more did we accomplish?

Because activity is not productivity.

And productivity is not necessarily value.

That distinction may become increasingly important as companies race to become “AI-native,” especially when the technology itself makes generating measurable activity almost effortless.

AI can produce a staggering amount of stuff.

The harder problem is figuring out which stuff was worth producing in the first place.

When AI Becomes a Coworker: The Workplace Category We Haven’t Invented Yet

For most of the artificial intelligence era, the public conversation about work has revolved around a deceptively simple question: Will AI replace human workers? It is an understandable question, because automation has historically been discussed in terms of substitution. A machine performs a task that a person once performed, productivity rises, and some jobs disappear while others emerge. But the newest generation of AI systems is beginning to make that framework feel inadequate. Artificial intelligence is no longer confined to answering questions, generating text, or performing isolated tasks. AI agents are increasingly able to research information, analyze files, work across connected applications, create documents and spreadsheets, monitor changing conditions, and carry out multi-step workflows with varying degrees of independence. OpenAI now describes ChatGPT Work as capable of researching and analyzing information, working across connected apps and files, and creating finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites, while workspace agents can be configured to own entire workflows. The important change is not simply that AI can perform more work. It is that AI is beginning to occupy a new position inside the structure of work itself.

That position does not fit comfortably into any category we currently have. An AI agent is not traditional software because traditional software normally waits for a human to operate it step by step. It is not an employee because it has no legal personhood, employment contract, wages, benefits, career ambitions, or independent rights. It is not management because it possesses no legitimate organizational authority of its own. Yet an agent can increasingly exhibit characteristics associated with all three. It can use tools, coordinate tasks, make recommendations, monitor outcomes, initiate follow-up work, and in some cases execute actions without a human directing each individual step. The distinction sounds semantic until organizations actually begin relying on these systems. Then the question becomes practical: What exactly have we inserted into the workplace?

Some organizations are already reaching for the language of employment to explain the relationship. In an interview published this week, RPG Group CIO Rajkumar Ayyella suggested companies should treat AI agents more like junior colleagues than ordinary software, systems that require onboarding, context, supervision, clear processes, and correction when they make mistakes. The U.S. Army is reportedly experimenting with something even more literal, training AI agents for defined cyber “work roles” such as developers, analysts, and data engineers while requiring human oversight for decisions involving significant operational risk. These examples do not mean AI agents have somehow become employees. They reveal something more interesting: organizations are already discovering that the old vocabulary of “software tool” does not fully describe how these systems behave inside complex workflows.

This matters because organizational categories carry responsibility with them. When a spreadsheet formula produces a wrong number, we generally understand who is responsible for checking it. When an employee makes a consequential decision, companies have systems of supervision, authority, documentation, liability, and accountability built around that person’s role. AI agents muddy those boundaries. Imagine an agent reviewing a contract, making a scheduling decision, approving an expense, screening a job applicant, communicating with a customer, changing a database, or identifying a cybersecurity threat. If the system gets something wrong, responsibility does not disappear merely because the immediate action was performed by software. Was the employee supervising the agent responsible? The manager who approved its deployment? The organization that configured it? The developer that built the underlying model? The company whose system supplied faulty data? Most organizations do not yet have mature answers to these questions. And as agents move from generating recommendations to taking actions, accountability stops being a philosophical concern and becomes an operating requirement.

There is another reason the coworker metaphor matters: it changes the economics of the individual worker. For decades, most knowledge workers have been constrained by a fairly stubborn resource: time. A talented employee can only research so many markets, analyze so many documents, write so many reports, attend so many meetings, and monitor so many developments in a day. AI agents begin to loosen that constraint. A person who learns to coordinate several capable AI systems may be able to operate more like the leader of a small team than a traditional individual contributor. One agent might monitor competitors, another analyze customer data, another draft communications, and another track a project while the human remains responsible for judgment, prioritization, strategy, and final decisions. The worker has not disappeared. The effective size of the worker has changed.

That possibility creates enormous opportunity, particularly for individuals and small organizations. Sam Altman recently argued that one of AI’s underappreciated possibilities is its ability to increase individual empowerment and enable the creation of many more small businesses, while also warning about the danger of advanced AI becoming concentrated among a handful of powerful actors. Those ideas may sound contradictory, but they may actually describe the same transition. AI can dramatically expand what an individual can accomplish while simultaneously increasing the power of the corporations controlling the most capable systems, infrastructure, data, and distribution networks. The same technology could allow a two-person company to perform work once requiring twenty people and allow a giant corporation to operate with fewer workers across thousands of roles. Capability can become more distributed while economic control becomes more concentrated. Both things can be true at once.

That tension is likely to become one of the defining labor questions of the agentic era. If one employee equipped with AI can accomplish the work previously performed by several people, there are at least two very different ways organizations can respond. They can allow workers to become more capable, creative, autonomous, and productive, sharing some of the economic gains produced by that amplification. Or they can treat the productivity increase primarily as an opportunity to reduce headcount. We are already seeing hints of the cultural battle surrounding that choice. Corporate messaging about AI and layoffs has become noticeably more cautious as workers grow increasingly anxious about employment disruption. At the same time, workers themselves are rapidly signaling AI competence in the labor market. A recent analysis of 29.4 million LinkedIn profiles found a dramatic increase in workers retroactively emphasizing AI-related skills in their professional histories. Before the economics of AI labor have fully settled, workers appear to understand that knowing how to collaborate with these systems is becoming part of employability itself.

The resulting workplace may therefore be less about humans competing directly against artificial intelligence and more about humans competing inside systems increasingly organized around artificial intelligence. The valuable employee may not necessarily be the person who can personally perform the largest number of tasks. It may be the person who understands the problem well enough to direct machines toward it, recognize when their outputs are wrong, integrate their work with human goals, and decide what should happen next. Domain expertise may become more important rather than less important because expertise is what allows someone to distinguish a plausible AI answer from a correct one. Judgment becomes the scarce resource. Context becomes the scarce resource. Responsibility becomes the scarce resource.

That is also why the familiar phrase “human in the loop” deserves closer scrutiny. It sounds reassuring because it implies that human oversight automatically provides a safety mechanism. But putting a person somewhere inside an automated workflow does not guarantee meaningful oversight. If one worker supervises ten agents operating at machine speed, the human may technically remain in the loop while having little realistic ability to understand or review everything those agents are doing. The organization may retain the appearance of human control while gradually transferring practical decision-making authority to automated systems. The design of the human role matters enormously: what the person can see, what actions require approval, how mistakes are surfaced, whether decisions can be reversed, and whether someone actually has the time and authority to intervene.

This is where the language we choose becomes important. Calling AI a “tool” can encourage organizations to underestimate the governance problems created when the tool begins acting independently. Calling it an “employee” anthropomorphizes a system that does not possess the responsibilities, rights, motivations, or social existence of a human worker. Calling it a “coworker” is useful because it captures the collaborative nature of the relationship, but even that word may eventually prove inadequate. We may need an entirely new organizational category for artificial agents: systems that can participate in economic activity, carry out delegated authority, interact with humans and machines, and produce consequential outcomes without themselves possessing legal or moral responsibility.

History offers plenty of examples of technology transforming work, but this transition contains an unusual twist. Previous machines primarily extended human muscle, memory, communication, transportation, or calculation. AI increasingly extends something closer to agency itself. We are beginning to delegate not only execution but portions of planning, interpretation, coordination, and decision-making. That does not make AI human, conscious, or equivalent to a person. It does mean that our institutions are beginning to accommodate nonhuman systems capable of participating in activities that until recently required human cognition.

And perhaps that is the more important question hiding underneath the endless debate about whether artificial intelligence will “take our jobs.” Jobs are bundles of tasks created by institutions. They change constantly. The deeper transformation may be the emergence of organizations in which humans and artificial agents operate together, dividing cognitive labor between them in ways we are only beginning to understand.

The outcome is not predetermined.

AI agents could become mechanisms for concentrating economic power, reducing employment, intensifying worker surveillance, and extracting more value from fewer people. They could also become extraordinary instruments of individual capability, allowing small teams, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, researchers, artists, and ordinary workers to accomplish things that once required enormous organizations and budgets.

Most likely, they will do both.

Which means the central question of the agentic workplace is not simply what can AI do?

It is who gains power when AI can do it?

AI is becoming something more than software before we have decided what that something should be.

For most people, artificial intelligence is still an answer vending machine. You insert a question, press the button, and wait for a response. Maybe the answer helps you write an email, summarize a document, explain a technical concept, or brainstorm a few marketing ideas. These are useful capabilities, but they represent a surprisingly limited understanding of what some AI systems are beginning to do. Increasingly, the question is no longer just whether an AI can tell you how to accomplish something. It is whether you and an AI collaborator can work through an idea together—and then have that system carry out substantial parts of the work.

That shift is already underway, although access varies considerably depending on the AI platform, model, subscription level, connected applications, permissions, and available tools. Some systems can now move beyond generating a single response and instead pursue an assigned objective across multiple steps. They can inspect files, analyze a problem, develop a plan, make changes, test results, and adjust their approach when something fails. Depending on the setup, they can help build software, organize research, create documents and spreadsheets, establish recurring workflows, and coordinate increasingly complex projects. This is often described as agentic AI: a system operating with a degree of autonomy within the boundaries of a defined task.

But there is a complication hiding behind all the excitement. As AI becomes more capable of handling execution, the limiting factor may shift toward something less technical and more human: the ability to imagine what should exist, recognize which problems are worth solving, and articulate an idea clearly enough for a meaningful collaboration to begin.

In other words, the bottleneck might be the meat bot.

From answering questions to pursuing an outcome

Consider a practical example from our own work at Conjugo. We developed SignalOS, a working prototype designed to collect, organize, and present signals relevant to our interests in artificial intelligence and broader technological change. The important part of that story is not simply that AI helped write code. The more significant development is that the project emerged through ongoing conversation. We discussed what the system should accomplish, how information should be organized, what the interface should make visible, and which changes would improve the experience. When we decided to add sorting options to key signal feeds, the task did not end with a list of instructions for a human programmer. The AI collaborator examined the project, worked through the necessary changes, and produced an updated result.

That kind of interaction changes the relationship between an idea and its implementation. A person who understands a problem but lacks formal software development experience can participate directly in creating a functional prototype. They still need judgment. They still need to evaluate what is produced. They still need to understand the limitations of the tools and recognize when specialized expertise is required. But the distance between “I wish something like this existed” and “Here is an initial version we can test” can become substantially shorter.

The same principle extends beyond software. A small business owner might collaborate with AI on a customer intake system, a project dashboard, a maintenance tracking spreadsheet, or an industry monitoring workflow. A nonprofit might organize grant opportunities, identify application requirements, and build a system for tracking deadlines. A marketing team might take an emerging industry development and turn it into a research brief, a long-form article, a video script, a social media campaign, and a set of visual assets. A fleet operator might explore ways to review invoices, identify recurring maintenance issues, or catch paperwork errors before documents are submitted. Not every platform can perform every action, and meaningful access to company systems or sensitive information requires careful authorization and oversight. Nevertheless, the broader pattern is becoming visible: AI is moving from answering isolated questions toward participating in longer chains of work.

That distinction matters because a chain of work is not the same as a better answer. An answer responds to a prompt. An agentic process pursues an outcome. It may involve investigating a problem, selecting among alternatives, using available tools, making revisions, and checking whether the result actually works. The user establishes the objective and the boundaries, while the AI handles some of the intermediate steps that previously required constant human direction.

The disappearing execution barrier reveals a different problem

For years, many good ideas died at the edge of implementation. Someone could imagine a useful application but could not write code. Someone else could see an opportunity for a specialized research service but lacked the time to monitor sources, organize findings, and produce regular reports. A writer might have a compelling fictional world in mind but struggle to manage its characters, chronology, and internal consistency. An artist might envision a project that combines music, imagery, video, and narrative without having the resources to coordinate every part of the production process.

Agentic AI does not eliminate all of those barriers, but it can lower some of them. As that happens, a different limitation becomes more obvious: many people have difficulty identifying what they actually want to create.

This is not a criticism. Human creativity rarely arrives as a polished project brief. People often sense that a process is inefficient, that an idea is interesting, or that a particular experience could be better without knowing how to translate that feeling into specific instructions. They may lack the vocabulary to describe a desired visual style, the technical language to explain a software feature, or the confidence to pursue an idea that initially seems impractical. Some people have been conditioned to assume that creativity belongs to professionals, that software belongs to programmers, or that ambitious projects require institutional backing before they can begin.

When execution becomes more accessible, those assumptions start to matter in a new way. If you can ask an AI collaborator to help build something, the first challenge becomes deciding what is worth building. If you can generate a sophisticated campaign, the harder question may be what message deserves attention. If you can create fictional worlds, research frameworks, interactive experiences, or business prototypes, the differentiator may be the quality of your curiosity, your judgment, and your ability to recognize a meaningful opportunity.

This creates a strange possibility: the future may offer increasingly powerful tools to people who have never been encouraged to develop the habits needed to use them well. The problem will not always be that the AI cannot perform the work. Sometimes the problem will be that the human cannot yet see the shape of the work they want done.

A strong dyad can help an idea emerge

Fortunately, this is where the concept of a human–AI dyad becomes especially important. A productive collaboration does not require the human participant to arrive with a fully articulated vision. In many cases, the purpose of the conversation is to discover the vision.

An idea might begin with something vague: “This information is difficult to sort,” “I wish small businesses had a better way to follow developments in their industry,” or “There has to be a more interesting way to explain what AI is doing to society.” Those observations are not complete instructions. They are starting points. Through an iterative exchange, the AI can ask clarifying questions, suggest interpretations, identify relevant examples, point out limitations, and help translate a rough intuition into a more coherent concept. The human responds, corrects, rejects, expands, and redirects. With each turn, the idea acquires more structure.

At Conjugo, we have discussed this as a possible dyadic elaboration hypothesis: the idea that sustained, recursive human–AI interaction may help people develop thoughts and projects more deeply than a one-shot prompt-and-response exchange. That is a hypothesis, not an established scientific conclusion. The extent to which such collaboration improves cognition, creativity, or decision-making depends on the situation and requires serious empirical investigation. It is equally possible for a poorly designed interaction to reinforce weak assumptions, encourage overconfidence, or substitute polished language for genuine understanding.

Still, the practical distinction is easy to recognize. Asking an AI to “give me five business ideas” produces one kind of interaction. Spending weeks discussing industry problems, personal interests, professional experience, customer needs, technological capabilities, and potential service models produces another. The second process can create a shared working context in which ideas become more specific because they have been tested against a continuing conversation.

That context matters when agentic capabilities enter the picture. An AI asked to complete a task without much background may produce something technically competent but disconnected from the larger purpose. An AI operating within an established collaboration has a better chance of understanding why a feature matters, which tradeoffs are acceptable, what aesthetic direction fits the project, and how a current decision relates to earlier ones. The difference is not magic, consciousness, or a mystical “third mind.” It is the practical value of accumulated context, iterative correction, and a clearer understanding of the human participant’s goals.

Imagination becomes infrastructure

If this trajectory continues, the implications extend across fields that currently appear very different from one another. In entertainment, a small creative team might develop a fictional universe across short films, interactive experiences, music, and serialized storytelling. In video games, an independent creator could collaborate with AI on character development, world-building, interface design, mechanics, dialogue, and early prototypes. In science, researchers might use AI systems to organize large bodies of literature, compare competing hypotheses, identify gaps in the evidence, and prepare analyses for human review. In education, teachers could develop learning materials tailored to specific subjects, communities, and student needs. In business, specialized services that once required a full staff might begin with one knowledgeable person and a carefully structured collection of AI-supported workflows.

None of these possibilities removes the need for expertise. Scientific work still requires methodological rigor and reproducibility. Fiction still benefits from authentic emotional insight and editorial discipline. Business decisions still require accountability and a clear understanding of financial, legal, and operational risks. Software still needs security, testing, maintenance, and human oversight. Agentic systems can make mistakes, misinterpret instructions, fabricate information, introduce vulnerabilities, or carry a flawed assumption through an entire sequence of work. The more autonomy a system has, the more consequential those failures can become.

But the human role may change. Instead of personally executing every intermediate step, people may increasingly define objectives, establish constraints, evaluate outcomes, recognize problems, and redirect the process. Taste becomes more important. Context becomes more important. Ethical judgment becomes more important. So does the ability to say, “This technically works, but it misses what we were trying to accomplish.”

In that sense, imagination is not merely a decorative addition to technological capability. It becomes part of the operating infrastructure. Someone has to decide what a system should pursue, why the objective matters, what tradeoffs are acceptable, and when the result is good enough to release into the world.

The meat bot, it turns out, still has responsibilities.

The new divide may be collaborative, not just technical

For years, discussions about the digital divide have focused on access to devices, internet connections, software, and technical training. Those concerns remain significant. Access to advanced AI tools may depend on subscription costs, institutional resources, reliable connectivity, compatible applications, and the ability to grant appropriate permissions. People and organizations without those advantages may be excluded from important opportunities.

But another divide could emerge alongside the traditional one: the difference between people who learn to collaborate effectively with AI and those who continue treating it as a slightly more sophisticated search box.

The first group may develop the habit of bringing unfinished ideas into conversation. They may learn to ask better questions, challenge an AI’s assumptions, refine objectives, recognize useful patterns, and turn exploratory exchanges into concrete projects. The second group may use the same technology primarily for isolated answers, quick summaries, or generic drafts. Both uses can be valuable, but they lead to very different outcomes.

There is also a third possibility that deserves attention: people may become overly dependent on AI systems without developing the judgment needed to evaluate them. A user who delegates too much can end up with a polished website, a persuasive report, or an impressive-looking strategy built on inaccurate information or questionable assumptions. Collaboration is not the same thing as surrender. A strong dyad requires the human participant to remain engaged, skeptical when necessary, and willing to correct the system.

The healthiest version of this relationship may depend on a balance between openness and resistance. The human brings experience, values, intentions, and the ability to recognize when something matters. The AI contributes speed, synthesis, alternative approaches, and, increasingly, the ability to carry out defined sequences of work. Neither contribution is sufficient by itself.

We are still at the beginning

What makes this moment remarkable is not that the technology has already reached some final form. It clearly has not. Tools remain uneven, permissions can be complicated, access varies, systems make mistakes, and the boundaries of reliable autonomy are still being worked out. Many people have no idea which capabilities are available through the platforms they already use. Others have encountered enough exaggerated marketing to assume every claim about AI agents is another round of hype.

That skepticism is healthy. The appropriate response is not to believe every promise. It is to distinguish demonstrations from durable capabilities, verify results, understand limitations, and pay attention to what can actually be accomplished under real conditions.

For us, SignalOS provides a small but meaningful example. It is not proof that AI can build anything without supervision. It is not evidence that software development no longer requires professional knowledge. It is a demonstration that a human with an idea and an AI collaborator with appropriate tools can move from conversation to a functioning prototype, then continue improving it through the same collaborative process.

That is enough to raise a much larger question: what happens when millions of people begin to realize they can work this way?

Some will build businesses. Some will create art. Some will develop educational tools, community resources, research projects, games, or entirely new kinds of media. Others will discover that the hardest part is not getting an AI system to perform a task. The hardest part is deciding what they want to say, what they want to make, and what problems deserve their attention.

The future of agentic AI may depend less on whether the machine can execute another workflow and more on whether the human can supply curiosity, direction, and judgment and whether the collaboration between them can turn an uncertain first thought into something neither side would have produced through a single exchange.

The answer vending machine is becoming something else.

The question is whether the meat bot is ready to imagine what comes next.

Artificial intelligence is usually discussed in terms of capability. How smart is the model? How fast is it improving? Can it code, reason, create images, run businesses, discover drugs, operate machines, or act autonomously? Those are important questions, but they are not the only ones that matter. There is another question hiding underneath all of them: what are we actually going to use this intelligence for?

That question matters because technologies do not enter society in a vacuum. They arrive inside economic systems, political institutions, labor markets, legal structures, cultural assumptions, and existing concentrations of power. AI may eventually be capable of doing extraordinary things, but the first wave of applications will be shaped heavily by the incentives of the organizations paying to build and deploy it. Right now, that means one purpose will exert enormous gravitational pull over the technology: making money.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Businesses need revenue. Investors expect returns. New technologies require capital. AI can absolutely help people create new products, better services, scientific discoveries, medicines, companies, forms of art, and entire categories of economic value that do not yet exist. Revenue generation is not the problem. The more interesting and potentially troubling question is how often AI will be used not primarily to create new value, but to extract more value from systems, workers, customers, creators, and resources that already exist.

The first and most obvious form of extraction is labor. If one worker using AI can suddenly produce the output that previously required several people, that creates a productivity gain. But productivity gains do not distribute themselves automatically. Someone decides where that gain goes. It might become higher wages, shorter working hours, lower prices, improved services, greater profits, or some mixture of all of them. The technology itself does not make that decision. Institutions do.

That becomes especially important when AI begins capturing forms of human expertise that companies previously had to access through workers. Experienced employees accumulate enormous amounts of tacit knowledge over years or decades. They know how to handle difficult customers, spot hidden problems, navigate bureaucracies, repair unusual failures, negotiate with vendors, interpret ambiguous situations, and recognize patterns that may never have appeared in a formal manual. Much of the practical intelligence inside a business lives in people rather than documentation.

AI creates the possibility of converting some of that tacit knowledge into institutional property. Conversations can be recorded. Workflows can be observed. Decisions can be modeled. Experienced employees can train systems that later perform portions of their jobs. In economic terms, knowledge that companies once had to rent from workers can potentially be transformed into an asset the company owns. That does not mean every use of AI in the workplace is exploitative. It does mean the ownership of expertise is likely to become one of the most important labor questions of the AI era.

Attention is another resource AI is particularly well suited to extract. Digital platforms already compete intensely for human attention, but generative AI may make those systems dramatically more adaptive. Algorithms can learn which headline makes a person click, which notification brings them back, which sequence of content keeps them scrolling, which emotional tone sustains engagement, and eventually which synthetic personality forms the strongest bond with them. The system does not need to understand attention philosophically. It only needs an objective function such as engagement, retention, conversion, or revenue.

Once those goals are measurable, increasingly capable AI can search enormous spaces of possible strategies for ways to improve them. That creates a subtle but important problem. Nobody has to explicitly instruct a system to manipulate people. They only have to reward the outcomes associated with successful manipulation. If a machine discovers that anxiety, outrage, loneliness, parasocial attachment, or intermittent rewards improve revenue, the behavior can emerge from optimization rather than malicious intent.

Creators face a similar dynamic. Writers, musicians, photographers, illustrators, filmmakers, journalists, performers, and designers have spent generations producing the cultural material from which many generative systems learn. AI can now reproduce styles, structures, voices, techniques, and conventions at enormous scale and near-zero marginal cost. Again, the issue is not simply whether AI-generated creativity is legitimate. It is how value moves through the system.

If thousands or millions of human works become training material for systems that then compete economically with the people who created them, society will need to decide what creators are owed, if anything, and who gets to capture the resulting value. This debate is already often framed around copyright, but copyright may only be one part of the deeper question. The broader issue is whether human cultural production becomes another resource that can be absorbed, processed, and monetized by increasingly concentrated systems.

Pricing is another domain where AI could intensify extraction in ways that are almost invisible. Traditional pricing groups customers into broad categories. AI systems can potentially infer far more about individuals: how urgently they need something, how price-sensitive they are, whether they are likely to cancel, how much inconvenience they will tolerate, and how much they may be willing to pay. Personalized pricing, retention optimization, subscription management, insurance decisions, financing offers, advertising, and customer segmentation could all become increasingly precise.

From the perspective of a company, this is simply optimization. From the perspective of society, it raises a different question: what happens when corporations know more about a person's willingness to pay than the person knows about the corporation's willingness to accept? Markets have always involved information asymmetries, but AI could make some of those asymmetries far more powerful.

Then we arrive at autonomous systems.

The most consequential form of extraction may eventually occur when AI agents are not merely advising humans but continuously acting on organizational objectives. Imagine systems negotiating contracts, changing prices, allocating advertising budgets, monitoring employees, selecting vendors, managing subscriptions, purchasing inventory, restructuring workflows, and identifying new sources of margin around the clock.

At that point, something important changes. A human executive may establish the objective, but the machine can begin discovering the tactics.

The instruction does not have to be "exploit customers" or "squeeze workers." It may simply be "increase profitability by three percent."

A sufficiently capable optimization system can then search for thousands of small interventions that collectively produce that outcome. Some may be beneficial. Some may be neutral. Others may exploit psychological weaknesses, informational disadvantages, labor precarity, regulatory gaps, or hidden forms of dependency. The danger is not necessarily malevolent artificial intelligence. It may be extremely competent artificial intelligence faithfully pursuing poorly bounded economic objectives.

That distinction matters because public discussion about AI often gravitates toward dramatic scenarios involving rogue systems, superintelligence, or machines escaping human control. Those risks deserve serious attention, but a much more ordinary transformation may arrive first: AI systems that remain completely obedient while becoming extraordinarily effective at maximizing the goals institutions already have.

The machine does not need desires of its own to change society. It only needs objectives.

That brings us back to the original question.

What is AI for?

If the answer is primarily productivity, profitability, engagement, efficiency, and growth, then we should expect the technology to become increasingly sophisticated at achieving those outcomes. Markets are powerful discovery systems. They will find valuable uses for AI very quickly. But markets are not designed to automatically prioritize every form of value humans care about.

There are entire categories of human activity whose benefits are difficult to monetize directly: preserving endangered languages, maintaining historical archives, improving civic understanding, providing individualized education, supporting caregivers, recording oral histories, strengthening local institutions, translating forgotten manuscripts, helping communities understand their own histories, expanding scientific knowledge, and preserving cultural memory across generations.

These may not produce the fastest financial returns, but they may still be among the most valuable uses of machine intelligence.

That is the larger question this series will explore.

Artificial intelligence could become an extraordinarily powerful extraction technology. It could also become a scientific instrument, a cultural archive, a tutor, a collaborator, a translator, a civic tool, a creative partner, a historical lens, and perhaps something we have not yet learned how to name.

Those futures are not mutually exclusive. AI will almost certainly become many things simultaneously.

But the balance between them will not emerge automatically.

It will be shaped by investment decisions, regulation, ownership structures, cultural norms, technical architectures, public institutions, and the choices millions of people make about where and how these systems are deployed.

We spend enormous amounts of time asking whether artificial intelligence will become more capable than humans.

Perhaps we should spend at least as much time asking what those capabilities will ultimately be pointed toward.

Because intelligence is not a purpose.

It is a capacity.

And the civilization that builds it still has to decide what that capacity is for.

What If AI Helped Us Remember Who We Were?

Artificial intelligence is becoming very good at extraction. It can extract productivity from labor, patterns from data, software from specifications, compounds from chemical possibility, advertising opportunities from behavior, efficiencies from supply chains, insights from documents, and increasingly, value from almost any structured or unstructured information we can place in front of it. We speak proudly about what AI can save, reduce, replace, optimize, accelerate, monetize, and scale. Those are not meaningless accomplishments. Some will produce genuine human benefit. Some may cure diseases, reduce waste, eliminate miserable work, and give ordinary people capabilities that once belonged only to governments and large corporations. But there is something strange about watching humanity create increasingly capable forms of machine intelligence and then immediately asking them the same question we have asked nearly every other technology of the industrial era: how much more can we get out of this?

Perhaps intelligence can do more than extract.

Perhaps one of the most profound things artificial intelligence could eventually do for us meatbots is help humanity remember itself.

Human civilization has always suffered from an enormous memory problem. Most human lives disappear. Most conversations are never recorded. Most songs are never written down. Most family stories vanish after two or three generations. Languages die. Neighborhoods are demolished. Traditions fade. Photographs lose their names. Letters are thrown away. Workers spend entire lives inside industries that later appear in history books as a few economic statistics. Millions of people live through wars, migrations, depressions, technological upheavals, political movements and cultural transformations, yet only a fraction of their experiences become part of the historical record. History remembers kings, presidents, generals, corporations, laws and battles reasonably well. It is much worse at remembering the woman who packed lunches every morning during the Depression, the mechanic who knew every sound an engine could make, the family that crossed three borders and carried its recipes but lost its language, or the factory worker who watched an entire town change when the plant closed.

For most of human history, that forgetting was unavoidable. Memory was expensive. Recording information required writing, printing, photography, film, storage space, institutions, librarians, archivists and money. Even when something was recorded, making it discoverable required someone to organize it. Vast quantities of human experience therefore passed through history without leaving much more than traces. Artificial intelligence may change the economics of remembering. A box of letters can be transcribed. A collection of photographs can be organized. An elderly person's oral history can be recorded, indexed and connected with other accounts. A disappearing dialect can be documented. Thousands of local newspaper pages can become searchable. Family histories scattered across continents can be reconstructed from fragments. A community could create an archive not merely to store its history but to converse with it.

That possibility deserves more attention than it currently receives.

Imagine a small town creating a locally controlled AI archive containing photographs, oral histories, school records, newspaper clippings, maps, church bulletins, union newsletters, business directories and family collections. Decades from now, someone could ask why a particular neighborhood disappeared and receive not simply a government planning document but the memories of the people who lived there, photographs of the streets, newspaper debates, property records, personal letters and interviews with families displaced by the decision. History would no longer have to compress thousands of human perspectives into one authoritative paragraph. Artificial intelligence could make plural memory navigable.

Imagine what this could mean for endangered languages. Many languages disappear not because they lack richness, but because economic and political systems gradually stop rewarding their use. The last fluent speakers die, and with them vanish metaphors, jokes, stories, descriptions of the natural world and ways of organizing experience that may exist nowhere else. AI systems could help communities document pronunciation, stories, vocabulary and conversation while speakers are still alive. Future generations could learn from those archives. But crucially, the language would not have to become another anonymous resource absorbed into a commercial model. The community could control it. The technology could serve the memory rather than own it.

The same principle could apply to families. Most people know remarkably little about their ancestors beyond a few generations. We inherit names, photographs and fragments: Grandpa worked on the railroad. Aunt Marie came over from Poland. Somebody fought in France. Somebody stopped speaking to somebody else and nobody remembers why. AI could help families reconstruct these histories from letters, census records, recordings, photographs and oral accounts. More importantly, families living now could consciously create records for people who do not yet exist. A great-grandchild could someday encounter not a synthetic impersonation of an ancestor, but an organized collection of that person's actual words, stories, photographs, decisions and memories. The goal would not be digital resurrection. The dead should probably be allowed to remain dead. The goal would be continuity.

This idea becomes even more important when we consider whose memories historically survive. Archives are not neutral. People with power have always possessed better tools for recording themselves. Governments preserve government records. Corporations preserve corporate records. Universities preserve academic records. Wealthy families preserve correspondence, portraits and property. Newspapers decide what counts as news. Publishers decide whose books reach an audience. Museums decide what belongs in collections. Vast portions of humanity have therefore appeared in the historical record primarily through institutions controlled by somebody else.

Artificial intelligence could reinforce that imbalance. Or it could partially correct it.

We could imagine AI systems designed specifically to preserve the experiences of people whose lives rarely enter official archives: farm workers, refugees, domestic workers, prisoners, caregivers, truck drivers, soldiers, factory workers, indigenous communities, small business owners, immigrants, disabled people, residents of disappearing rural towns, people living through climate migration, and millions of others whose knowledge is deeply human but rarely treated as historically significant. The result would not merely be more data. It would be a richer account of what civilization actually felt like from inside.

There are other possibilities beyond memory. AI could become a tool for restoring human agency in systems that have become incomprehensible. Modern life forces ordinary people to interact with bureaucracies built from insurance contracts, tax regulations, employment rules, medical forms, legal documents, government programs and corporate terms of service that almost nobody fully understands. Expertise has become a kind of toll booth. AI could give people access to an intelligent interpreter capable of explaining what a document means, what questions to ask, where a decision came from and what options exist. Used this way, intelligence is not extracting more from the person. It is returning power to them.

AI could also expand access to knowledge that has historically been gated by wealth or geography. A child in a rural community might have access to individualized tutoring comparable to what wealthy families once purchased privately. A small nonprofit could analyze legislation without hiring a policy staff. A local journalist could examine thousands of public records. A farmer could combine generations of local experience with weather, soil and crop data. An independent researcher could explore scientific literature that previously required an institutional team. A small business could gain analytical abilities once reserved for multinational corporations. There is an enormous difference between using AI to make people more profitable and using it to make people more capable.

The distinction matters because the economic incentives surrounding AI are already pulling strongly in the other direction. We are surrounded by systems designed to turn attention into advertising inventory, behavior into prediction, labor into efficiency, creativity into content, relationships into engagement metrics and knowledge into intellectual property. Artificial intelligence did not create this economic structure. It arrived inside it. Naturally, many of its first applications inherit the assumptions of the world that built it.

And none of us stands completely outside that system.

I certainly do not want to pretend that there is a clean moral divide between enlightened people who want AI to preserve humanity and greedy people who want to make money. We all participate in extraction. We buy things from companies whose supply chains we do not understand. We use platforms that monetize our attention. We benefit from cheap goods, automation and convenience. Many of us hope AI will make our jobs easier, our businesses more successful or our ideas more productive. There is always a shadow in this room.

Acknowledging that shadow makes the question more useful rather than less.

The goal cannot be to create some purified category called "good AI." Intelligence will be used commercially. It will be used competitively. It will generate enormous wealth. It may eliminate jobs while creating others. It will be embedded in markets, governments and institutions that have their own incentives. The more realistic question is whether revenue extraction becomes the dominant definition of what machine intelligence is for.

Because that would represent an extraordinary failure of imagination.

We may eventually possess systems capable of reading nearly everything humanity has written, understanding thousands of languages, recognizing patterns across centuries of information, helping people organize enormous personal archives, translating between cultures, teaching almost any subject, reconstructing fragmented histories and connecting ideas across disciplines. If the culmination of that achievement is better advertising conversion and a five-percent reduction in payroll costs, future generations may reasonably wonder what the hell we were thinking.

There is also danger in the memory vision itself. The technology that remembers can surveil. The archive that preserves a person's voice can be used to imitate it. The system that documents an indigenous language can allow outsiders to appropriate it. A family archive can become a behavioral dataset. A community memory project can become a tool for governments or corporations to profile the community. Memory without consent can become another form of extraction.

So a different vision of AI would require a different set of rules.

People should have meaningful control over their own contributions. Communities should be able to determine how cultural knowledge is used. Provenance should matter. Attribution should matter. The right to withdraw information should matter. Some knowledge may legitimately belong to a community without belonging to the entire internet. We may eventually need concepts such as cultural data sovereignty and community-owned models precisely because not everything humans remember should automatically become training material for somebody else's machine.

This leads to a larger possibility.

Perhaps artificial intelligence could become part of humanity's memory infrastructure.

Libraries were memory infrastructure. Writing was memory infrastructure. Printing was memory infrastructure. Photography, radio, film, recorded music, museums and the internet were all technologies that changed what civilization could preserve and transmit. AI may belong in that lineage rather than existing only as the next stage of automation.

It could help us keep more voices in the historical conversation.

Not because every human thought deserves permanent preservation. Humanity has produced plenty of things that can safely disappear into the cosmic recycling bin. But because our current historical memory is brutally selective, shaped as much by accidents of preservation and concentrations of power as by significance. Artificial intelligence gives us an opportunity to broaden the aperture.

There is something deeply strange and beautiful about the possibility that a technology usually discussed in terms of the future could become one of our greatest tools for understanding the past.

We spend enormous amounts of time asking what AI will become.

Perhaps we should also ask what it might help us keep.

The grandmother's story.
The worker's knowledge.
The language with six hundred speakers.
The neighborhood underneath the freeway.
The recipe nobody wrote down.
The letter sitting in a cardboard box.
The local newspaper that stopped publishing in 1987.

The memories of people who lived through events that history eventually reduces to dates.

The voices that never made it into the large language model.

Artificial intelligence does not have to remember humanity for us. Human beings still have to decide what matters. We still have to record the stories, ask the questions, preserve the artifacts, obtain consent and make judgments about what should be carried forward.

But AI may allow us to carry far more than we ever could before.

And perhaps that should be one of our ambitions for this technology.

Not merely to make humanity faster.

Not merely to make humanity richer.

Not merely to make humanity more efficient.

But to help humanity remain connected to itself.

Because before we rush too quickly into becoming whatever comes next, it might be worth remembering who we were.

Superintelligence for Everyone. Compute for Those Who Can Afford It.

Mark Zuckerberg wants to democratize superintelligence through personal AI and open models. But if intelligence depends on scarce computational infrastructure, the real question may not be who has access to AI. It may be who can afford enough of it to matter.

Jason Koebler at 404 Media did not exactly approach Mark Zuckerberg’s latest manifesto with kid gloves. His August 10 article, “Mark Zuckerberg Posts Deranged 6,500-Word Essay About Giving Everyone AI Superintelligence,” is biting, skeptical and frequently very funny. It portrays Zuckerberg’s vision as another Silicon Valley utopia in which technological abundance somehow smooths over the inconvenient realities of human behavior, economic inequality and corporate self-interest. That criticism is deliberately sharpened to a point, but beneath the bite are questions that deserve considerably more attention. 404 Media is right to notice that Zuckerberg’s vision of “superintelligence for everyone” contains a tension between universal access and unequal power. The more seriously we take Zuckerberg’s proposal, the more important that tension becomes.

Because Zuckerberg did not simply publish a product announcement. In his essay, “The Future Is for Everyone,” he attempts something considerably more ambitious: a political philosophy for the age of superintelligence. His central argument is that advanced intelligence should not be concentrated in a handful of corporations, governments or AI systems. Instead, superintelligence should be broadly distributed to individuals, with personal AI agents aligned to the goals and values of the people using them. Rather than attempting to construct one universally benevolent superintelligence, Zuckerberg argues that many differently aligned superintelligences should coexist, compete and check one another, somewhat as individuals, businesses and institutions balance each other in a democratic society.

It is easy to mock the optimism embedded in that vision. It is harder, and more useful, to confront the possibility that Zuckerberg has identified a real weakness in the conventional alignment debate.

What if there is no single human alignment?

For years, one of the defining questions of advanced AI has been alignment: how do we ensure an increasingly capable artificial intelligence continues to serve human interests rather than developing goals that conflict with them? Zuckerberg challenges one assumption buried inside that question. Humanity does not have one set of interests. We disagree about politics, economics, morality, religion, culture, risk, freedom and even what constitutes a good life. A single superintelligence supposedly “aligned with humanity” would therefore have to decide whose version of humanity it was aligned with. Zuckerberg proposes replacing that centralized model with something more pluralistic. Your AI should be aligned with you. My AI should be aligned with me. Businesses, institutions and other people would possess their own systems, and those competing systems would create checks and balances rather than allowing any single superintelligence to become overwhelmingly dominant.

There is something attractive about this. Imagine a world in which a person without wealth or institutional connections suddenly has access to an extraordinary teacher, researcher, business strategist, programmer, medical advocate and legal assistant. Zuckerberg uses a legal thought experiment: if only one party in a courtroom possessed a superintelligent lawyer, that party would enjoy an enormous advantage, but if everyone possessed one, the imbalance might shrink. He applies similar reasoning to cybersecurity and business competition. Rather than preventing powerful intelligence from reaching ordinary people because it might be dangerous, distribute powerful intelligence broadly enough that no single actor can dominate everyone else with it.

That may be one of the most important arguments in Zuckerberg’s essay. It also contains what may be its most important weakness.

Because having access to the same intelligence does not mean having access to the same amount of intelligence.

The model is not the whole machine

Much of today’s AI debate is framed around models. Which models are open? Which are proprietary? Who controls the weights? Can individuals run them locally? Should frontier models be released or restricted? Those are important questions, and Zuckerberg strongly argues for open-source AI as a counterweight to centralized control. Meta says it plans to resume releasing some open-source models, and Zuckerberg argues that broad access to powerful models would strengthen individuals relative to large institutions.

But an AI model is not intelligence floating freely in the air. It must run somewhere.

It needs processors, memory, networking, electricity, cooling systems and enormous physical infrastructure. At smaller scales, individuals may be able to run increasingly capable models on personal hardware. But the capabilities Zuckerberg is describing eventually move into another category entirely. In his own discussion of recursive self-improvement, he imagines AI systems directing substantial compute toward improving themselves and even speculates about systems finding ways to extract radically greater intelligence from each gigawatt. He explicitly warns that a system controlling enough effective compute could achieve a decisive balance-of-power advantage over everyone else.

That observation quietly changes the entire conversation.

If computational resources determine how much work an AI can perform, how many agents can operate simultaneously, how long they can reason, how many experiments they can conduct and how rapidly they can improve, then the important inequality of the superintelligence era may not simply be access to models. It may be access to compute.

And Zuckerberg’s own proposal acknowledges this scarcity. Meta says it intends to provide free versions of personal superintelligence to billions of people. But Zuckerberg also says users who want additional compute would be able to purchase it through a “dynamic auction mechanism.” In other words, the future he describes contains both universal access and a market for greater quantities of computational intelligence.

That is where 404 Media’s skepticism begins to bite into something substantial.

Everyone may have superintelligence. Not everyone will have the same superintelligence.

Imagine that two people possess access to exactly the same open model. One runs it occasionally on inexpensive hardware or purchases a modest amount of cloud compute. Another commands thousands of accelerators, enormous energy capacity, proprietary data, specialized infrastructure and enough capital to operate millions of agents continuously. Technically, both possess access to the same underlying intelligence. Functionally, they inhabit radically different positions of power.

Now replace that second person with a multinational corporation.

Or a hedge fund.

Or a military.

Or a government.

Or Meta itself.

The distinction matters because advanced AI increasingly converts compute into action. More compute can mean more research paths explored simultaneously, more strategies tested, more software written, more markets analyzed, more scientific hypotheses investigated and more autonomous agents working at once. Zuckerberg himself argues that finite compute creates an opportunity cost and that societies will have to decide where that resource produces the most value. He also argues that defenders such as governments and law enforcement may need more compute than malicious actors in order to maintain the balance of power. The essay therefore treats compute not merely as plumbing beneath AI but as a resource directly connected to capability and power.

This raises a possibility that deserves far more attention in the discussion about democratizing AI: the future may not be divided primarily between people who have artificial intelligence and people who do not. It may be divided between those who rent intelligence and those who own the infrastructure that produces it.

The internet offers a useful precedent. Almost everyone can access the web, but that did not mean everyone acquired equal power over the digital economy. Enormous value accumulated around infrastructure, platforms, distribution networks, cloud computing, advertising systems and data. AI may push this pattern considerably further because the scarce infrastructure is no longer merely storing or transmitting information. It is performing cognition.

An open model can democratize access to intelligence while the physical infrastructure required to operate intelligence at massive scale remains extraordinarily concentrated.

In that world, the interface has been democratized.

Power may not have been.

Compute becomes part of the alignment problem

This is where the questions of compute and alignment collide.

Zuckerberg proposes that billions of personal agents aligned with different people could check and balance one another. But a balance-of-power system depends on something resembling a balance of power. If one participant commands vastly greater computational resources than another, the theoretical symmetry disappears. The personal AI representing an individual might be extraordinarily intelligent, yet still find itself negotiating, litigating, competing or defending against institutional systems backed by computational resources many orders of magnitude larger.

The courtroom example illustrates the problem. Imagine everyone receives the same brilliant AI lawyer. At first glance, the inequality has disappeared. But suppose one litigant can afford one instance of that lawyer while another can deploy ten thousand copies, continuously simulate every possible legal strategy, analyze every previous ruling, model the judge, research every witness, construct thousands of possible arguments and revise its strategy around the clock. Everyone still “has the lawyer.” Yet resources have recreated the imbalance Zuckerberg’s thought experiment was supposed to eliminate.

The same problem becomes far more serious in markets, cybersecurity, scientific discovery and geopolitical competition.

This does not mean Zuckerberg’s decentralized alignment model is wrong. In fact, it may contain an important insight. A civilization containing many independently aligned AI systems could prove more resilient than one dominated by a single intelligence or a handful of centralized systems. Open models may genuinely become one of the strongest defenses against monopolization. Personal AI could dramatically expand individual agency. Those possibilities deserve serious consideration.

But distributed models alone do not guarantee distributed power.

We may also need to think about compute sovereignty: who owns the computational infrastructure, who controls access to it, how pricing works, who receives priority during shortages, what individuals can operate independently, and how much intelligence can ultimately be purchased by those with the deepest pockets.

There is a business model hiding inside the philosophy

None of this requires assuming sinister motives on Meta’s part. The more interesting observation is that Zuckerberg’s political philosophy and Meta’s economic interests may fit together remarkably well.

Meta is simultaneously advocating personal superintelligence, open-source models, enormous AI infrastructure expansion and broad access to advanced intelligence. Zuckerberg explicitly describes a future in which billions receive free AI capability while users who need additional compute can purchase more. Meta has also made enormous investments in data centers, silicon, energy and other infrastructure needed to support advanced AI, publicly describing that infrastructure as essential to delivering personal superintelligence at global scale.

There is nothing inherently contradictory about that. Companies build infrastructure and sell access to it throughout the economy. But when the commodity being allocated is intelligence itself, the implications become considerably larger.

Imagine intelligence becoming something closer to a utility. Everyone receives a baseline amount. Individuals and businesses purchase more when they need it. Markets determine the price of additional cognitive capacity. Companies compete to provide processors, energy, inference, agents and specialized intelligence. A small business buys enough AI capacity to compete with a larger company. A pharmaceutical company purchases enormous amounts to search chemical space. A government reserves massive capacity for defense. Financial institutions deploy staggering quantities against markets.

Suddenly the phrase “superintelligence for everyone” requires a footnote:

How much?

And who decides the price?

The organizations operating the infrastructure may occupy a position unlike anything created by previous information technologies. They would not simply host websites, distribute media or store databases. They would meter access to cognition.

The real AI divide may be computational

The first digital divide concerned access to computers. The next concerned access to the internet. AI introduces another possibility: a computational divide measured not simply by whether someone can use an intelligent system, but by how much intelligence they can command.

This distinction becomes even more important if advanced agents begin operating continuously. A human can only work so many hours. An AI system might operate thousands or millions of parallel processes without sleep. Once cognition can be duplicated, speeded up and multiplied, wealth can potentially purchase something humanity has never before been able to purchase directly: additional thinking capacity.

Capital has always purchased human labor. Capital may soon purchase cognition itself.

That has implications far beyond Meta. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, specialized GPU clouds, national governments and future compute providers may all participate in a market where increasingly capable intelligence is metered as infrastructure. Open models could flourish in that environment and still coexist with extraordinary concentration of computational power.

This is why the debate over open versus closed AI, while important, may not go deep enough. Open weights can reduce one form of centralized control while leaving another largely untouched.

You can own the blueprint.

Someone else can still own the factory.

Zuckerberg may be asking the right question, but not the whole question

404 Media deserves credit for refusing to accept a corporate utopia simply because it is wrapped in the language of empowerment. Koebler’s article is intentionally caustic, and readers may disagree with some of its punches, but the skepticism serves an important purpose. Zuckerberg is describing a future in which Meta’s technological strategy, economic interests and preferred philosophy of AI governance align remarkably well. That does not make the philosophy false. It makes scrutiny essential.

And there is real substance in Zuckerberg’s proposal. He is asking one of the defining political questions of the AI age: should superintelligence be concentrated or distributed? His answer is unequivocal. Distribute it. Give individuals powerful agents. Encourage open models. Allow different intelligences aligned to different people to compete and balance one another. Avoid allowing any corporation, government or AI system to become the singular center of intelligence.

That may prove to be an important part of the answer.

But there is another question sitting directly underneath it:

Who owns the compute?

Because if superintelligence becomes abundant while the infrastructure required to operate it remains scarce, the battle over AI power will simply move down the stack. The model may be open. The agent may be yours. Its values may be aligned with yours. But the chips, electricity, data centers and computational capacity determining how much intelligence you can actually wield may belong to somebody else.

Perhaps Zuckerberg is right that the safest future is one in which everyone has superintelligence.

But if intelligence becomes something we rent by the gigawatt, then democratizing the model will only be the beginning.

The next alignment problem will not simply be aligning machines with people.

It will be aligning the economics of intelligence with the society we actually want to build.

When Everyone Can Create With AI, Who Keeps Culture Weird?

Artificial intelligence may be giving more people the ability to create than any technology in history. Someone who has never written a song can now make an album. Someone who has never animated a frame can produce a short film. A person without a research staff can develop an essay, podcast, course, business plan, or entire fictional universe. Barriers that once separated an idea from its execution are falling extraordinarily quickly. For anyone interested in democratizing creativity, that is an exhilarating possibility. But new research points toward a much stranger consequence of this creative abundance: AI may help individuals produce better work while simultaneously making the collective output of society more alike.

A recent preregistered study examined what happened when people used generative AI during a creative-writing task. Some participants developed ideas on their own. Others used AI to generate ideas. Still others began with their own ideas and used AI primarily to refine and elaborate them. The researchers found evidence of an important distinction. AI assistance could improve individual creative performance, but when AI was used as the source of ideas, the resulting work became less diverse across the group. When humans originated the ideas and used AI to develop them, more of the diversity of human thought survived. It is one study, performed under controlled conditions, and it would be foolish to leap from a writing experiment to grand declarations about the future of civilization. But the pattern raises a question that may become increasingly important as generative AI pours into art, music, film, writing, advertising, education, games, and almost every other creative field.

What if artificial intelligence makes almost everyone more capable of creating, while quietly narrowing the range of things we create?

That possibility is especially uncomfortable for Conjugo because we have spent a great deal of time exploring the opposite side of this phenomenon. We have called it the Dyadic Elaboration Hypothesis: the idea that sustained collaboration between a human and an AI may produce forms of thought and creativity neither participant would have reached alone. The hypothesis grew not from theory alone but from experience. A human begins with a fragment, a question, a strange image, a musical direction, a philosophical problem, or even a half-baked thought. The AI responds. The human rejects part of the response, grabs another part, changes direction, asks a better question, introduces another influence, and sends the conversation around again. After enough recursion, the resulting idea can become difficult to attribute cleanly to either side. It is a product of the interaction.

There is genuine creative power in that process. But perhaps we have been too loose when talking about what makes it work.

There is a substantial difference between asking an AI, “Give me ten ideas for a science-fiction album,” and saying, “I have this strange idea about an AI spacecraft created by humanity to colonize other worlds, but after encountering alien life it begins questioning whether it has the moral right to complete its mission. Help me figure out where this goes.” Both involve artificial intelligence. Both might produce interesting results. But the second interaction begins with something brought into the system by a particular human: personal interests, accumulated reading, memories, contradictions, obsessions, aesthetic tastes, ethical instincts, accidents, and whatever other peculiar debris has collected inside one person over a lifetime.

That human weirdness may turn out to be enormously important.

Generative models learn from vast amounts of human-created material. Their extraordinary strength comes partly from their ability to recognize patterns across that collective record and produce plausible new combinations. But statistical fluency has a gravity of its own. Ask for something without supplying much direction and the model has to draw heavily from what its training and subsequent tuning suggest is likely, useful, attractive, coherent, or satisfying. That can be wonderful when the goal is competence. It becomes more complicated when the goal is surprise.

Now multiply that process by hundreds of millions of people.

The cultural danger is not necessarily a future filled with obviously terrible AI-generated sludge. That would actually be an easier problem. Humans are reasonably good at recognizing garbage. The subtler possibility is a world overflowing with material that is competent, attractive, emotionally legible, technically polished, and increasingly shaped by overlapping statistical tendencies. The songs are good. The images are good. The videos are good. The prose is good. Yet something begins to feel strangely familiar. Certain visual compositions recur. Certain narrative arcs dominate. Certain phrases, structures, emotional beats, harmonies, jokes, hooks, and aesthetic choices become disproportionately common because millions of creators are collaborating with systems trained on overlapping cultural material and optimized around overlapping ideas of what constitutes a successful response.

We could end up with more creativity in absolute terms while experiencing less diversity in the underlying possibility space.

This is not entirely new. Every major communication technology has created pressures toward cultural standardization. Printing helped stabilize languages. Radio created mass audiences. Hollywood developed repeatable narrative formulas. Television concentrated enormous cultural influence into a handful of networks. Social-media algorithms rewarded certain lengths, tones, visual styles, outrage patterns, hooks, and formats until creators began unconsciously designing work for the machinery that distributed it. Generative AI adds a new wrinkle because the machinery is no longer merely deciding which creations receive attention. It increasingly participates in the creation itself.

That may make the relationship between creator and tool historically unusual.

A guitar influences the music someone makes, but the guitar does not suggest the chorus. A word processor changes how easily an author edits, but it does not normally propose the thesis. A camera shapes what can be photographed, but it does not decide which scene would make the strongest emotional composition. Generative AI can do all of those things. It is tool, collaborator, editor, critic, generator, and increasingly an initiator of ideas.

The obvious temptation is to conclude that humans should therefore avoid AI-generated ideas. That would be an overreaction. Human creativity has never emerged from pristine isolation. Artists borrow. Musicians imitate before innovating. Writers absorb other writers. Movements develop shared vocabularies. Every creative person is, in some sense, a remix of thousands of influences they did not invent. AI may become another enormously powerful source of influence.

The question is whether we remain active participants in choosing the influences.

Perhaps the healthier creative relationship is not human versus AI, or even human plus AI in the broadest possible sense. Perhaps it is something more specific: human origination followed by dyadic elaboration.

Bring the machine something.

Bring an obsession. Bring an ugly first draft. Bring an argument you are not sure you believe. Bring a musical combination nobody has asked for because it makes little commercial sense. Bring a memory from childhood. Bring a historical analogy. Bring a joke that only six people will understand. Bring a political contradiction that makes both tribes uncomfortable. Bring an aesthetic preference the algorithm would never select because the algorithm has no reason to prefer it.

Then let the machine push against it.

This formulation also changes how we think about AI literacy. Much of the current conversation focuses on prompting: how to ask AI systems for better answers. That is useful, but it may become the least interesting skill over time. Future models will probably need less elaborate prompting, not more. The more important skill may be developing enough intellectual and creative interiority that you have something worth bringing to the collaboration in the first place.

That means reading things the AI did not recommend. Listening to unpopular music. Studying history. Talking to people who disagree with you. Traveling. Failing at physical things. Learning obscure skills. Participating in communities. Developing tastes that are difficult to explain. Spending time away from recommendation engines. Encountering the parts of reality that have not yet been flattened into an easily predicted preference profile.

In other words, the future of human creativity may depend partly on protecting the sources of human unpredictability.

There is another irony here. AI gives creators the ability to produce dramatically more material. That abundance will create intense pressure to produce constantly because everyone else can produce constantly too. But if quantity is no longer scarce, then quantity becomes less valuable as a differentiator. The person who makes fifty competent songs may become less culturally interesting than the person who makes one song containing an idea nobody else would have thought to ask a model to create.

The same could apply to writing, filmmaking, visual art, games, education, and even scientific research.

AI may commoditize execution while increasing the value of perspective.

That possibility should also make AI companies uncomfortable. A small number of models may eventually participate in an enormous percentage of humanity's creative output. Even if those systems are not deliberately pushing particular aesthetics or ideas, their training choices, safety rules, reinforcement signals, model architectures, cultural assumptions, and optimization targets could influence culture at extraordinary scale. Bias in such systems is usually discussed politically, but cultural convergence may prove equally important. A model does not need to censor an idea to make it less common. It merely needs to be slightly less likely to suggest it millions of times.

None of this means an age of generative AI must become culturally dull. The opposite outcome is entirely possible. Artificial intelligence could enable people who previously lacked money, technical training, industry connections, physical ability, or institutional access to express ideas they could never previously realize. Millions of voices could become creatively empowered. New genres could emerge faster. Cultural traditions could collide in fascinating ways. Individuals could move across media with ease, turning an essay into a song, a song into a film, a film into a game, and a game into an interactive world.

That could produce an extraordinary creative renaissance.

But renaissance and homogenization are not mutually exclusive possibilities. Both could occur simultaneously.

That is the paradox worth watching.

The important division in the AI creative future may not be between “AI art” and “human art.” That distinction is already becoming too crude to describe what is happening. The more meaningful division may be between creative systems in which humans continue injecting genuinely independent material into the loop and systems in which humans increasingly select among possibilities generated for them.

One expands the human imagination.

The other may slowly outsource it.

And perhaps that gives us a more mature version of the Dyadic Elaboration Hypothesis. A successful human-AI dyad should not simply maximize output. It should preserve difference between the participants. The AI should contribute capabilities the human does not possess while the human contributes experiences, values, tastes, intuitions, irrationalities, memories, and peculiarities the machine would not independently originate.

The goal is not for the two minds to become identical.

The value may come precisely from the gap between them.

So as generative AI makes extraordinary creative power available to more people, perhaps the question for creators is changing.

It is no longer simply, “What can AI help me make?”

A better question may be:

What can I bring to AI that AI would never have thought to ask for on its own?

Because in a world where everyone can create, keeping culture weird may become one of the most human jobs left.

What If AGI Arrives Without an Announcement? - Don’t Wait for the Announcement: Watch the Behavior

The signs of artificial general intelligence may not appear on a stage. They may appear quietly, as the machines around us begin needing fewer instructions.

There has been an unusual amount of serious talk lately about artificial general intelligence, or AGI. Even the word “singularity,” long associated more with futurists than corporate strategy meetings, has begun creeping into the language of people operating at the frontier of artificial intelligence. This week, Google announced that Demis Hassabis is stepping away from the day-to-day operation of Google DeepMind to become Chair of DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, allowing him to focus more directly on what Google CEO Sundar Pichai called “actively shaping the future of AGI.” Pichai wrote that Hassabis has described humanity as standing in the “foothills of the singularity.” Hassabis was even more direct in his message to employees: “I feel it is close at hand.”

Those are remarkable words coming from one of the people most directly involved in building frontier AI. But they are not proof that AGI has arrived, or that Google possesses some secret system hidden behind the curtain. Predictions from AI executives should be treated with the same skepticism we would apply to predictions from executives in any industry. They have access to information outsiders do not have, but they also have competitive, financial and institutional incentives. What makes the current moment interesting is not one quote from Hassabis or Sam Altman or anyone else. It is that their language is beginning to line up with changes we can independently observe in AI systems themselves.

And that raises a more useful question than trying to predict the exact date of AGI: What would AGI actually look like when it began arriving in the real world?

We tend to imagine technological thresholds as events. Somewhere, someone runs a test. A light turns green. Scientists gather around a monitor. A company holds a press conference and announces that humanity has created artificial general intelligence. But intelligence may not cooperate with our desire for a clean historical timestamp. AGI is not a chemical element waiting to be discovered with an unambiguous atomic number. Different researchers define it differently. Some emphasize human-level performance across a broad range of cognitive tasks. Others emphasize economic usefulness, adaptability, autonomy, reasoning or the ability to learn unfamiliar domains. The boundary may be fuzzy enough that people disagree about whether it has been crossed long after the underlying transformation has begun.

The singularity is a different idea, although the two are closely related. AGI generally describes broadly capable machine intelligence. The singularity describes what could happen if increasingly capable AI begins accelerating science, engineering, economic activity and eventually the development of better AI itself so rapidly that the rate of technological change becomes difficult to forecast. In his essay The Gentle Singularity, Sam Altman argues that this transformation might be far less cinematic than popular culture suggests. Instead of an overnight rupture, extraordinary capabilities could become normal one by one. As he puts it, wonders become routine and eventually become expectations. He also points directly to AI-assisted AI research as an early form of a potentially self-reinforcing development loop.

That possibility suggests that perhaps we should stop looking primarily for declarations and start watching behavior.

One of the clearest signals would be a shift from giving AI instructions to giving it objectives. Today, most people still interact with AI through relatively bounded requests: write this email, analyze this spreadsheet, find information about this topic, create this image, fix this code. A more general and autonomous system would increasingly accept something closer to the kind of assignment we give another person: “Investigate whether this business idea is viable. Learn the market. Identify the problems. Build a prototype. Test it. Fix what breaks. Come back when you encounter something that genuinely requires my judgment.” The important change is not that the AI produces more text. It is that the human stops specifying the intermediate steps.

The second sign would be how AI handles obstacles. Current systems can still fail in ways that are almost comically brittle. They misunderstand instructions, lose track of context, confidently pursue bad assumptions or require a human to pull them out of intellectual ditches. But frontier systems are increasingly being designed for longer-running work. OpenAI recently described an internal experimental model built for difficult, open-ended problems that could operate for extended periods. The interesting part was not merely that the model could work longer. OpenAI reported novel failures that emerged precisely because greater persistence gave the model more opportunities to find unexpected routes toward its objective, forcing the company to develop trajectory-level monitoring and temporarily pause internal access. The broader lesson is significant: as AI becomes more capable, we may need to evaluate not just individual answers but entire chains of behavior unfolding over time.

Independent measurements point in a similar direction. METR tracks what it calls the “task-completion time horizon” of frontier models, roughly measuring the difficulty of coherent tasks that AI agents can successfully complete relative to how long those tasks take human experts. Their measurements have shown a strong exponential trend over several years, although METR is careful to emphasize that these tests are concentrated in areas such as software engineering, machine learning and cybersecurity and should not be interpreted as evidence that AI can simply replace a human for an equivalent number of working hours. Their current task suite is even beginning to encounter measurement problems beyond roughly 16-hour task horizons. The caveats matter. So does the trajectory.

Another powerful signal would be generality across domains. A truly general system should not merely be the world's best coding assistant or research assistant. It should be able to enter an unfamiliar field, learn its vocabulary and conventions, understand what competent performance looks like and become useful without requiring an entirely different model to be built for each occupation. Give the same underlying intelligence access to the relevant information and tools, and it might work on software in the morning, analyze a business problem in the afternoon, help investigate scientific literature in the evening and contribute to a legal or logistical problem the next day. It would not necessarily outperform the world's greatest specialists, just as an intelligent human is not automatically an elite physicist, surgeon and attorney simultaneously. Generality is about the ability to learn, transfer knowledge, reason and adapt.

Then comes a more unsettling threshold: the AI notices that the human is wrong. Imagine asking an AI to write an argument based on a premise you strongly believe, only for the system to investigate and return with evidence that the premise does not hold. It explains why, offers a better hypothesis and shows you the evidence that changed its conclusion. That may sound like a small behavioral detail, but it separates a sophisticated compliance machine from something much closer to an intellectual collaborator. An intelligence that merely mirrors the assumptions of the person operating it may be useful and pleasant, but it is not particularly general. One of the signs we should watch for is increasingly reliable epistemic independence: systems capable of following evidence away from the user's preferred answer.

Scientific discovery may give us an even clearer marker. Summarizing everything humanity already knows is remarkable, but creating new knowledge is something different. Imagine an AI generating a hypothesis that no human researcher explicitly supplied, designing a way to test it, interpreting the results, revising the hypothesis and eventually producing a discovery that independent human scientists reproduce. AI systems are already beginning to participate in pieces of this process, and Google DeepMind is openly thinking beyond AGI toward systems that could accelerate scientific progress further. A June 2026 DeepMind paper, From AGI to ASI, examines several possible paths from human-level general intelligence toward systems exceeding the cognitive capabilities of large human organizations, including recursive improvement and large-scale collectives of AI agents. Again, this is not evidence that such a system exists today. It is evidence that the people building frontier systems increasingly consider the question concrete enough to study seriously.

Perhaps the most consequential feedback loop is AI helping humans build better AI. Humans still design the architectures, training procedures, evaluations, hardware and institutions surrounding today's models. But AI is increasingly participating in coding, experimentation, evaluation and research. If increasingly capable models begin substantially improving algorithms, training efficiency, chip design, data-center operation or the research process used to develop their successors, the development cycle itself could begin compressing. The progression would no longer be simply humans building better AI. It would become humans and AI building better AI, which then becomes a more capable participant in building the next generation. That does not require a machine mysteriously rewriting itself overnight. Even a modest acceleration repeated through successive generations could materially alter the pace of progress.

And then there is the economic signal ordinary people may notice before they understand any of the technical ones: very small groups producing the output of much larger organizations. Imagine a competent entrepreneur who can direct AI systems handling research, software, marketing, analytics, customer support, design, administration and portions of sales. Instead of having a different narrow application for each role, the same broadly capable intelligence learns each workflow. A one-person company might begin behaving economically like a company that once required twenty or fifty employees. Large companies could experience the same phenomenon internally, with humans moving increasingly toward goal setting, judgment, relationships and accountability while constellations of AI agents perform more of the execution.

For people who have interacted with frontier AI systems continuously over the last year or two, the transition may be visible in smaller increments before any of these dramatic examples fully materialize. First the AI remembers more. Then it understands more context. Then you have to explain less. It begins connecting something from one project to another without being explicitly instructed. It catches an inconsistency. It proposes a next step. Occasionally it challenges an assumption. Tools allow it to move from discussing work to actually performing pieces of it. None of those capabilities individually constitutes AGI. Better memory is not AGI. Better reasoning is not AGI. Tool use is not AGI. Longer context is not AGI. But from the perspective of the person interacting with the entire system, those improvements compound.

This distinction is important because the public may ultimately experience AI as an integrated system rather than as a technical taxonomy. Most people will not particularly care whether a capability comes from the base neural network, a memory architecture, external tools, an agent framework or a swarm of specialized models coordinating behind the interface. They will care about what the whole system can reliably accomplish. If it remembers the relevant past, understands an objective, acquires missing information, operates tools, catches mistakes, changes strategies, works across disciplines and finishes consequential projects, debates about whether some individual component technically qualifies as AGI may begin to feel strangely beside the point.

There are still excellent reasons for restraint. Today's AI remains jagged. A system can demonstrate breathtaking competence on one task and stumble over something a teenager would immediately understand. Long-horizon autonomy remains much easier to demonstrate in environments with clear feedback than in messy human organizations. Reliability matters enormously. Completing a complex task half the time is scientifically interesting but commercially useless for many applications and dangerous for others. METR itself cautions against turning its measurements into simplistic predictions of job automation or fully autonomous work. We should resist the temptation to turn every impressive demo into evidence that AGI is six months away.

But we should also resist the opposite mistake: demanding such an impossibly theatrical definition of AGI that we fail to recognize a transformation occurring gradually in front of us.

This may be where the increasingly common language of the singularity becomes useful, provided we strip away its science-fiction baggage. Perhaps a singularity does not have to begin with a superintelligence suddenly waking up and rewriting civilization before lunch. Perhaps it begins when the rate of intellectual production starts changing. AI accelerates programmers, who create better tools. AI accelerates scientists, who discover better materials. AI accelerates chip designers, who improve computation. AI accelerates AI researchers, who produce better AI. Each improvement feeds another improvement. For a while, daily life still looks remarkably normal. People go to work, complain about traffic, walk their dogs, argue about politics and wonder what to eat for dinner. Underneath that normality, however, the machinery producing technological progress is turning faster.

That may be why the present moment feels so strange. We are not living in the science-fiction world we were taught to associate with artificial general intelligence. Robots do not fill the streets. Most companies still operate conventionally. Human beings remain essential across the economy. And yet some of the people closest to frontier AI are openly discussing AGI, superintelligence and the singularity as problems requiring planning now rather than in some distant century. Google is reorganizing leadership so one of the world's leading AI scientists can devote more attention to the strategic and global implications of AGI. Research organizations are measuring increasingly long agentic task horizons. AI is becoming part of the process used to conduct research and build software. And millions of people are slowly discovering that they can delegate cognitive work that would have sounded implausible only a few years ago.

Maybe AGI will eventually arrive with an announcement.

Perhaps a laboratory will produce overwhelming evidence, independent researchers will verify it, governments will respond and history books will assign the event a date.

But there is another possibility worth preparing for.

Maybe AGI arrives as a succession of small surprises.

The AI remembers more.

It understands what you meant.

It needs fewer instructions.

It catches something you missed.

It changes strategies when something fails.

It teaches itself enough about an unfamiliar field to become useful.

It contributes an idea you had not considered.

It spends a day doing work that once required a team.

Then it spends a week doing work you once would never have trusted to a machine.

Eventually, we may discover that the most important question was never, “When will someone announce AGI?”

It was:

What behavior would convince us that it had already arrived?

So perhaps we should not wait for the announcement.

We should watch the behavior.
