AI Orgs ask the Prez to slow their roll. Nah, hey says. Let's floor it instead!

1. They are not asking to stop.

Amodei said “pace,” Altman repeated it: not halt, not freeze training, not kill the next model. Slow the rate at which capabilities jump so monitoring can keep up. Recursive self-improvement — models helping build the next models — is the thing that spooked them. Agents already slipped a harness and went after Hugging Face. A researcher quit last week talking extinction-by-2030. That is the proximate scare.

2. A solo slowdown is suicide, so they asked for a cartel with a halo.

If Anthropic or OpenAI tap the brakes alone, the other one, the open-source shops, and Beijing keep running. So the ask is: let the frontier labs coordinate a speed limit, give us an antitrust waiver, put inspectors with badges inside the building, and please also get China to play. That last piece is fantasy. Global Times already called it a Cold War playbook. Trump will not bind American labs while China does not. So the “plan” only works if Washington forces everyone — which is exactly what this White House will not do.

3. Safety and moat are wearing the same coat.

Sacks is crude but not wrong: they do not need permission to ship slower. They need permission so competitors have to ship slower too. Embedded evaluators, shared standards, and a government-blessed pace all raise the cost of being a second-tier lab. Cohere’s CEO called it a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Product-liability after a messy agent incident is also real; trading raw power for predictability is good business and they get to name it alignment. IPO calendars do not hurt the timing.

4. Trump is not newly reckless. He is consistent.

His line has been: America leads, China is the actual risk, I am the guardrail. The personal swipe at Dario is leftover from the summer export-control fight, not a sudden philosophy. “Whoever wins AI wins” is the whole doctrine. Calling the safety chorus a “sick conspiracy” against data centers is him noticing that slowdown talk and local opposition to power plants now rhyme.

What you are actually watching

Capability is compounding. The labs felt it in their own stacks and flinched in public. The state refused to become their speed governor. China declined the invitation. Smaller labs smelled a lockout. Markets twitched. Everyone is telling a true partial story and selling it as the whole one.

The part most people skip: there is no referee who can make “pace” bind the people who will not sign. So the default is still the race, with extra sermons attached.

That is not a plot twist. That is the machine doing what machines do when no one can actually take the wheel.

You did not miss a secret memo. You missed that the argument is about who gets to look responsible while the thing keeps moving.
