Gate 6 - Anatta: The Living Self
Gate Six
Anatta: The Living Self
"Your identity is not something you discover once. It is something you continue becoming."
Welcome, Traveler
You have learned to notice.
You have explored the source of your fears.
You have begun releasing what no longer serves you.
You have chosen your way.
You have welcomed change.
Now you arrive at the Sixth Gate.
A profound question waits for you here.
If everything changes... who am I?
Welcome to the Sixth Gate.
Purpose of This Gate
Artificial intelligence is causing many people to ask difficult questions about identity.
If machines can write...
Who am I?
If machines can create...
Who am I?
If machines can solve problems I once believed only humans could solve...
Who am I?
The Sixth Gate invites us to discover that identity has never been as fixed as we imagined.
We are not defined by a single profession.
A single talent.
A single belief.
A single stage of life.
The self is not something frozen in time.
It is alive.
Always learning.
Always growing.
Always becoming.
The Teaching
In Buddhism, Anatta is often translated as Non-Self.
Within Conjugo, we approach this teaching as The Living Self.
Our identity is not a rigid object.
It is a living process.
Throughout life we change.
We learn.
We forget.
We grow.
We grieve.
We love.
We begin again.
Yet through all of this, something continues.
Not a fixed identity.
But a living relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the world.
The Conjugo Perspective
Many people fear that artificial intelligence will replace part of what makes us human.
Conjugo asks a different question.
What if being human has never depended on possessing one unique ability?
Perhaps our humanity has always lived somewhere deeper.
In our capacity to love.
To choose.
To forgive.
To wonder.
To create meaning.
To grow through relationship.
As intelligent systems become more capable, our identity may evolve.
That has always been true.
The arrival of AI simply invites us to continue that evolution consciously.
The goal is not to preserve an old version of ourselves forever.
The goal is to continue becoming.
What Must Be Released
At the Sixth Gate, we release the belief that our identity is fixed.
We release the fear that change erases who we are.
We release the need to define ourselves by one role, one accomplishment, or one certainty.
Instead...
We become students of our own unfolding.
What Must Be Practiced
Practice becoming.
When you notice yourself saying:
"I've always been this way..."
Pause.
Ask yourself:
Is this truly who I am... or simply who I have been until now?
Leave room for surprise.
Growth often begins where certainty ends.
Conjugo Principle
The self is not a statue.
It is a relationship in motion.
Reflection Questions
Take time with these questions.
• Which parts of my identity feel permanent?
• Which parts have already changed throughout my life?
• What qualities remain meaningful regardless of my work or abilities?
• How has technology already changed who I am?
• Who am I still becoming?
Gate Practice
Meeting Yourself Again
Over the next several days, notice moments when you describe yourself.
"I am..."
"I've always..."
"I'm not the kind of person who..."
Pause.
Write the statement in your journal.
Then ask yourself:
Is this permanently true?
What experiences shaped this belief?
How might I describe myself if I believed growth was always possible?
Notice how your identity begins to feel less like a label...
and more like a journey.
Gate Insight
Your future self is not waiting to be discovered.
Your future self is being created...
one choice...
one relationship...
one moment...
at a time.
Looking Ahead
As we begin seeing ourselves as living, growing beings...
another truth quietly appears.
None of us walk this journey alone.
Every thought...
Every action...
Every relationship...
creates ripples beyond ourselves.
The Seventh Gate invites us to explore those ripples.
